Germany in Autumn 2025

These days, there is much discussion in Germany regarding the economic and political future of our country. According to Hansjörgen Fölz, Federal Managing Director of the German SME sector, the Mittelstand and thus the very heart of the German economy finds itself in a precarious and alarming situation. To jumpstart the economy, the Merz administration has initiated substantial public investments. However, after five and a half months, the Merz government’s track record proves sobering: bankruptcies among SMEs and unemployment are on the rise, while the state is incurring massive debt. Meanwhile, in neighboring France, the threat of sovereign default looms large.
Europe as an Opportunity
As a forward-looking solution, I envision a European path that entails the consolidation of the budgets of all 27 EU member states, establishes a common administration for the EU, and makes political decisions both domestic and foreign within this union. Furthermore, I believe that the 21st Asian Century assigns a significant role to our continent.
We must seize this opportunity to safeguard our own cohesion as well as that of the world. This means we must overcome self-interest and think in European terms and, from that vantage point, look beyond our own horizons to bring West and East closer together. The tools to achieve this already exist in Brussels and Strasbourg. Their powers should be expanded and, in some instances, likely revised. I envision a revival of the ideals of 1789. At that time, France celebrated the French Revolution with the ideals of "Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity." It symbolizes the dawn of the Enlightenment.
