One for the road
I left the beautiful little town of Lassan in Western Pomerania on August 18, 2026, around dawn and set off for southern Germany. After a 16-hour drive, I arrived in Neustadt an der Weinstraße in the Palatinate region in the evening. The following day, I hiked to Hambach Castle, which I had discovered by chance while driving by.
The Golf was quickly parked, my hiking boots on, and I was on my way to the castle nestled on the hill. This place is steeped in history: Here, in 1832, a first step towards European unification took place. Young people from Poland, Germany, and France gathered there and exchanged ideas. From here, the March Revolution of 1848 began in Germany. In May, the first German National Assembly convened in Frankfurt am Main to establish the first German nation-state. These initial nationalist aspirations in Germany were suppressed in 1849 – nevertheless, the revolutionary path begun by the student fraternities in March 1848 culminated 23 years later, in 1871, in the founding of the German Empire in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles.
I took the opportunity to visit Hambach Castle and take photos.
and to explore its architectural framework. I noticed that its facade is oriented east-west. A conversation with the lady at the castle's information kiosk provided me with more information about its history. In the evening, I continued on to Landau, stayed overnight, and arrived in Marienthal, France, on August 21st. I spent the time there until August 23rd, 2026, staying in a tiny house. I have since arrived in Pfungstadt near Darmstadt, where I am trying to transport all my belongings to my new apartment on Rügen. The lease starts on September 1st, 2026.
